On Friday, May 1, members of the school newspaper, "The Elephant in the Room," attended the New England Scholastic Press annual conference at Boston University. Student reporters, editors, photographers, and social media managers went to various workshops and seminars led by talented professionals in the world of journalism.
Three students won special achievement awards for their submissions to the annual contest:
- Griffin Angus won honorable mention for his article "Burrows Bails Amid Financial Fiasco, Phelan to Fill in"
- Layla Raymond won third place for her graphic design "Out of Service"
- Adam Cheairs won fifth place for his article "The Town that Turned Toward the Sun."
"Elephant in the Room" is a monthly publication with a loyal staff of about 15 students. That they earned these top awards against schools with staff sizes of 80 to 100, speaks to their intelligence, work ethic, ethical judgement, and desire to find original stories with good angles on the truth. Elephant in the Room is always looking for hard-working student writers and creators. They meet Wednesday mornings in room 212, around 7:00 am.

We are excited to share that Cunningham student Tori Fernsten is a featured reader on the Milton Public Library’s Dial a Story service for the month of May!
Dial a Story is a wonderful Milton Public Library service that allows families to call 617-915-1915 anytime to hear librarians read stories, tell jokes, and share other fun content. The selections change each month, and the library also includes guest readers, often students, in the Dial 6 slot.
This month, Tori is reading "After the Fall "by Dan Santat. Her recording is live now and will be available throughout May. We are proud of Tori and hope Cunningham families will take a few minutes to call and hear one of our own students share a great story.

Fourth grade students in our elementary schools welcomed volunteers from the Milton Garden Club to discuss the Neponset River. Students learned about the history of the river and its connection to the town of Milton, and then worked with maps of Milton to identify their school, ponds, estuaries and Miton landmarks. Topics discussed included the indigenous people of Milton and their relationship with the river, environmental wonders of the Neponset River Estuary and the importance of being caretakers of the river and its tributaries as residents of Milton.
Thank you to the volunteers from the Garden Club who were able to visit every fourth grade class across all four elementary schools.

Our Advanced and AP Art students recently traded the familiar studios of Milton High School for the Venetian-inspired halls of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. This immersive field trip offered an opportunity for our young artists to study world-class works beyond the classroom, providing a day filled with historical discovery and creative rejuvenation.
The experience was centered around a specialized Renaissance themed tour, where students engaged in discussions regarding the museum’s most prominent works. Rather than simply observing, MHS students analyzed the techniques of the Old Masters, sharing insights and asking questions that brought the history of the 14th and 15th centuries to life. A highlight of our trip was conversation around the infamous Gardner Museum Heist. Standing before the haunting empty frames where stolen masterpieces once hung, students reflected on the enduring legacy and vulnerability of the art world.
After touring the museum, students spent time on the outskirts of the museum’s breathtaking central courtyard. Surrounded by lush seasonal flowers and stunning architectural views, the courtyard served as a serene temporary studio where students captured the interplay of light and flora, translating the museum's beauty onto paper.
Beyond their artistic talents, our students served as exceptional ambassadors for Milton High School. All three tour guides took note of the group, specifically complimenting our students on their inquisitive nature, high level of engagement, and respectful representation of Milton High’s student body. We returned to MHS with a renewed sense of inspiration that will undoubtedly fuel our creative projects for the remainder of the year!

On April 16th, Milton High School Latin Club traveled to the College of the
Holy Cross to compete in Classics Day. This event celebrates the study of Latin and Roman culture with several high schools from around the state. Milton competed in trivia, costume, and art. All members took part and enjoyed both competing and watching other performances. The MHS costume group put on a skit of the myth, "Baucis & Philemon" from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Our students were excited to take home the second place trophy! Students were also able to view parts of the college campus and learn about opportunities the college has to offer.

On April 17th, Milton High School partnered with Early Investors, Inc. to host its third annual Financial Literacy Fair, bringing together over 50 professional volunteers from 15 local businesses and approximately 200 students.
Participants engaged in a hands-on budgeting simulation that provided practical knowledge regarding monthly expenses, lifestyle choices, and financial planning. This interactive experience allowed students to learn the realities of budgeting, saving, and investing while preparing for life's unexpected costs. It was also a rewarding professional networking experience and a fun event for students to participate in on the day before April break.

Opening tonight at MHS - The Drowsy Chaperone!
What’s The Drowsy Chaperone About?
Feeling a little down, the “Woman in the Chair” puts on the cast album of her favorite musical, the fictional The Drowsy Chaperone. As the record plays, the show magically comes to life right in her apartment. Throw in two lovebirds on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, gangsters disguised as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, and of course a drowsy chaperone, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a night full of laughs.
️Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Golden Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another!

Before break, the MHS courtyard was transformed into a stage for the Poetry Club’s second annual Open Mic, an evening filled with moving verses and plenty of laughs. The night was a resounding success, highlighted by a standout performance from Slam Poetry winner Jacky Yang.
This event wouldn't have been possible without a massive team effort. We want to extend a huge thank you to Mike Buzzell (our head custodian) and Dobie Illich (photographer) for their support, as well as Mr. Collyer’s Tech Club for their expert stage and equipment setup. We also want to celebrate our graduating senior leaders—August Alvarova, Oliver Jones, El Craghead-Goldman, Markaysa Porter, and Shannon Hale—for an unforgettable "last hurrah." Finally, a special shoutout goes to Daniel Ruiz, who worked closely with Mr. Cunningham to help the evening run smoothly.
