Cunningham 2nd grader Lucy D. is a featured reader on the MPL's Dial-a-Story service during the month of December!

As a reminder, Dial-a-Story is a Milton Public Library service where folks can call 617-915-1915 anytime and listen to librarians read stories, tell jokes, and the like. The content changes monthly, and for a while now they've been including guest readers - usually kids, who read a picture book in the Dial 6 slot. Lucy is reading Knight Owl by Christopher Denise, and December stories are posted now (they'll be live all month long). Give a call to hear Lucy reading her book!

The MHS Unified Art class has brought something new and meaningful to the MHS cafeteria, a creative and thoughtful community art piece inspired by New York street artist Kelsey Montague’s #whatliftsyou project. Montague’s murals feature large wings that encourage people to think about what inspires them while posing with the mural and then sharing their image on social media. Our students were excited to be part of something involving the whole school, and it was great to see how focused and passionate they were while painting each feather. Many noted that the process felt calming and therapeutic.

To kick off the project, Unified Art students traced, cut, and watercolor-painted hundreds of feathers. On the feathers, students wrote what inspires them and then shared that energy with the rest of the school by placing hand-painted feathers in teachers’ mailboxes and inviting students across MHS to participate in their community art piece.

With help from Art Room teaching assistant Mel Blalock, all of those feathers were brought together to create two beautiful wings now hanging in the cafeteria under the phrase “What Lifts MHS.” The finished piece is an eye-catching display that highlights and celebrates our student body and the inspiration they bring to school each day.

All MHS students and staff are invited to keep adding to this interactive project. If you find yourself in the cafeteria, find a blank feather within the display and write down what lifts you. If you take a photo with the wings, please share it with our class Instagram page @miltonhighart and tag #whatliftsmhs. This beautiful installation stands as a wonderful testament to the unifying power of art.

We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this project that demonstrates the way in which creativity can foster community connection in a thoughtful and insightful way!

Earlier in November, Pierce Drama students enjoyed a field trip and participated in a great day of theater at Boston's Huntington Theatre.

The trip started with pre-show theater activities, exploring themes from the show, including grief, loss, memory, and use of humor in processing difficult experiences. Students then attended a live performance of SARDINES followed by a talk-back Q&A session with the actor and playwright. In the afternoon, participating students ate lunch at the Christian Science reflecting pool and shared in a post-show wrap-up discussion back at Pierce.

Hunger Is Not a Game: While reading "The Hunger Games," students in Ms. Power's 8th-grade Project-Based English class were inspired to take action against real-world hunger. Connecting fiction to reality, they organized a food drive called "Hunger Is Not a Game" to support local food pantries. Through their efforts, students collected over 75 items and learned that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
