Over the course of March, MHS Student Leaders helped promote mindfulness across the school, including events such as four-way volleyball, walk and talks, Bingo, Lucky Advisory, a raffle, a school-wide playlist, after school crafts, coloring pages, and a visit from a therapy dog. These events were held during advisory or after school as a way for students and staff to connect and socialize in a friendly environment. The events all month were very successful as Student Leaders, students and faculty members enjoyed their time together throughout the many activities!

Music Discovery Night was a hit! Thanks so much to everyone who joined Tri-M students for their first Music Discovery Night on Monday, March 24. Our MHS music students had a blast introducing younger students to new instruments through an interactive "Instrument Petting Zoo," exploring various ways to make music using technology, and creating shakers out of recycled materials and face-painting in the craft area! Students of all ages also had the opportunity to make music together by singing "We Don't Talk About Bruno" in three part harmony and rocking out on bucket drums and improvising to the song "We Will Rock You." Our MHS music students loved meeting members of the Milton Music community during this event and can't wait for more opportunities to collaborate together in the future!

Thanks to MHS student Fabiola Goyau and her classmates for this write up about their recent field trip! Read below to hear their thoughts. Our experience at the Future Steminist conference was amazing. It was a great opportunity to connect with other women interested in STEM and learn more about women in science. We enjoyed the different activities such as DNA extraction and the Harvard Medical School MEDscience patient assimilation. Through these activities we learned how to find DNA in fruit and how to diagnose a patient in real life with the very little experience that we had. These activities were super helpful and inspiring for everyone. Other classes included Sea Level Rise hosted by Stone Living Lab; Lab Automation - Leveraging Robotics to Improve the Scientific Process; Lego Robotics; Rocket launches hosted by the Museum of Science. After the sessions were done, each activity organizer held a resource table where we could gather information on each of the programs. The volunteers at the resource tables had built interest into several colleges to apply for like Simmons University, BU, and MCPHS. They offered pamphlets and other tools useful to any student looking to pursue a future career in STEM. Overall, we would like to thank UMass Boston for allowing the program to use their campus as a venue, providing a delicious breakfast and lunch, and hosting such an amazing event! Also, we would like to thank the School to Careers organization for connecting us and providing transportation.

As part of a unit on West African empires, our seventh grade Social Studies students were invited to listen to Elsa Wiehe, a professor at Boston University's African Studies center and a native of Mauritius, an island nation off the along Africa's east coast. Her presentation reflected the topics our students have been studying for the past month; the Sahara as a trade route, the settling of civilizations along the Sahel, the wealth of African kingdoms like Mali, Ghana and Songhai through salt and gold trade, and the educational mecca of Timbuktu. Students were also able to learn about African jelis - those venerated members of African society that acted as historian, poet, musician and artist. In a connection to the present, Professor Wiehe played some of the music of a modern-day jeli who performed in Boston last year.

On Friday February 14th, Pierce Middle School was excited to have Dr. "The Machine" Jesse Green come and do grade level assemblies for all of our students titled 'Chainsaws, Cheeseburgers and Rock n Roll.' His inspiring story was entertaining, engaging and motivated our students to seek out their dreams. From the words of Green, "Opportunities are like cheeseburgers. Some are big, some are small, some are basic, and some have it all. Some even have bacon."
