Unified Art Trip to MFA! As we wrap up a fantastic semester of our MHS Unified Arts class, we were excited that students had the opportunity to attend a field trip to the Museum of Fine Arts during the last week of class. To fund the trip, students held a successful handmade ornament sale over the holidays. At the museum, they explored artworks that have been central to our studies this semester, including Monet's Waterlilies, Ancient Greek storytelling vessels, traditional African masks, and a large scale modern sculpture by glass artist Dale Chihuly. This visit allowed students to connect the dots between what they learned in class and the real-life masterpieces they encountered, deepening their appreciation and passion for art. Students were particularly excited to share this experience with their peers, stepping beyond the walls of Milton High to engage in a unique artistic journey. They would like to thank everyone who supported them with the ornament sale - you made this rewarding experience possible. Students from the Unified Arts class look forward to showcasing their artwork from their very successful first semester at the MHS Fine Arts Show in May!

Celebrating Our Differences (COD) is a 4th grade disability awareness program that helps students understand what it is like to live with different abilities. The program consists of five units which include learning differences, physical differences, vision, hearing, and autism. Across the five units, the program helps build empathy by incorporating hands on activities with a lecture from a guest speaker to share their personal experiences living with a disability. A highlight of the program is having MPS students serve as guest speakers to share their experiences with their peers. All fourth graders across the four elementary schools participate in the program. For the 1st lesson of this year, throughout the month of January, our 4th graders participated in the Vision unit. We were excited to welcome back our guest speaker, Dave Lynn. Dave brought his guide dog, Frosty and talked with our students about how he uses his guide dog to help him remain independent and navigate the world despite losing his vision. Students learned about the assistive technology available that individuals with visual impairments use to remain independent, as well as how to respectfully approach and offer to guide an individual with a visual impairment. Thank you to Dave Lynn - and Frosty - for spending time with our students!

This week Ms. Mary Beth's full-day Tucker preschool students worked as teams to wonder about this question: How can you think about the needs and perspectives of others when making something to help them? The children began with a reading and discussion of the classic story Make Way for Ducklings. After much discussion and reflection each team created an integrated Engineering and Empathy Challenge. You can see how proud of their creations each team is!

In December, MHS Jazz Band students Layla Raymond and Chloe Bergeron had the opportunity to participate in the JazzHers Honors Ensemble Festival. JazzHers is a non-profit organization which provides the opportunity for female and non-binary students to have an enriching experience focused on jazz improvisation. Chloe and Layla spent the first portion of the festival in clinics and rehearsals and then had the opportunity to perform in a concert showcasing what they learned over the past two days. From Layla and Chloe: “JazzHers was a wonderful experience to play with female and non binary students across Massachusetts. It was even elevated by guest performances from musicians and composers Christine Fawson and the KDF Big Band. Despite the array of different backgrounds, Lisa Linde and all those at Jazzhers provided a space for students to thrive and talk about their own experiences with Jazz. I loved every second of the two days spent and can't wait to attend another session."

Just before break, our MHS students who are members of Milton Youth Advocates for Change (MYAC), in collaboration with The Milton Coalition, hosted a Mental Health Fair at MHS. With a goal of educating students about mental health, ways to manage stress, and when/how to ask for help, MYAC students coordinated a variety of stations to provide education and interactive activities to students during their Health and Gym classes. Thank you to the agencies and professionals who participated! The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office provided an activity that demonstrated the effects of driving under the influence; the Milton Department of Health demonstrated the impact of not asking for help through a “How Much Can You Hold” activity; the Norfolk Suicide Coalition discussed the importance of self care, coping skills, and self acceptance; the Leggett Group answered questions and provided information about therapy; Blue Willow presented information about how acupuncture can be used to support mental health and Freckle Face Yoga encouraged students to move their bodies and educated them on how yoga can support mental wellbeing. The MYAC students did an impressive job planning and executing this well attended event!

Just before the winter break, our MHS Christmas Carolers entertained Unquity House residents while Advisory students delivered Holiday Treat Bags they made for the residents. The visit closed with a rousing sing-along of "Deck the Halls." The MHS Students were grateful for the chance to spread holiday cheer! A special 'shout out' to our van drivers, Mr. Mackinaw and Mrs. Spinelli, who made the trip possible.
