A message from the Milton School Committee: Over the past several years, the Milton School Committee has explored how we can make our district calendar inclusive and more representative of our diverse community. We revised our calendar policy in 2022 to ensure that students celebrating holidays not acknowledged with an official day off would receive necessary accommodations. We are in the process of reviewing our calendar and need your input. We are gathering community input through a survey, a series of open conversations taking place in schools and the November 20 School Committee meeting. We hope all will share their thoughts in one of those ways. The survey can be found here: https://forms.gle/RmLtV4T6xaFx3k658 The zoom link to speak at the November 20 SC meeting is here: https://miltonps-org.zoom.us/j/99038500535#success

Some of the best days of the year are our school's Veterans Day events. Today, it was Cunningham, with honored Veteran guests, special speakers, student music and an all school flag raising. Thank you to all who have served!

Last week, our 6th graders traveled to the Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in Sharon where they participated in a guided hike to observe geological features and processes. In addition to the connections to our science curriculum, the field trip was fun - providing many opportunities for students to bond through team building activities! Due to the generosity of the Milton Foundation for Education and the Pierce PTO, there was no cost to students to attend the trip. The MFE donated the funding for every student to participate in the experience at Moose Hill and the PTO covered the transportation expenses. We are incredibly grateful to the MFE and Pierce PTO for their support in providing fun and enriching experiences for our students!

At the end of October, the MHS Poetry Club hosted an Open Mic Night in the MHS courtyard. Almost one hundred students showed up and shared their voices and lyrical talents at this beautiful event that brought a diverse student audience together. It was a heartwarming evening filled with inspiring performances, supportive applause, and a strong sense of community. One student reflected, "I found Open Mic Night to be an engaging and fun experience. It was a nice event to hang out with friends while also being able to hear people’s thoughts through creative forms of literature. The weather, decorations, and hot chocolate created a cozy atmosphere that was enjoyable."

Our MHS students have been on the move with recent field trips to Harvard, MIT, the Museum of Scientific Instruments, an HBCU College Fair, Hancock Hill and NYC for a Broadway Show! These trips simply would not happen without the creativity and dedication of the MHS staff. These trips take work - planning, driving, securing funding, giving time up out of school - and our MHS staff figures it out and makes it happen!

Our 8th graders held an "Election Celebration" last week! Almost 100 students decorated their Civics classrooms and then attended a pizza party in the cafeteria. These 8th graders say - it's time to vote!

Earlier in October, our elementary schools hosted almost 100 of their former students for community service during the MHS SAT day. Students helped out in classrooms, read stories to kids, played at recess, and so much more! Thanks to all of our 9th grade volunteers and to our schools for welcoming them!

Big thanks to MHS Theatre's Stephen and Laura Markarian for taking 50 students to NYC last weekend to see Once Upon A Mattress on Broadway! What a fantastic opportunity for so many of our students to see a Broadway show. Word from the theater staff was that our MHS students were the best behaved group of high schoolers they’ve ever had in attendance . We say - no surprise there!

Last week, Tucker 5th graders visited the USS Constitution and museum. This was the first time visiting the ship as part of the 5th grade curriculum and it was a huge hit with both students and teachers. A huge thank you to Kevin Cook, Director of Veterans Services, for facilitating the trip for our students!

Boo! These Tucker Kindergarteners are getting into Spooky Season in the art room! To make these adorable pumpkins, they practiced cutting and gluing skills, and mixed red and yellow paint to make different shades of orange.

Señora Brown's Glover 4th graders put their Spanish skills to good use this week! Students performed skits about students visiting the nurse's office and practiced their Spanish while talking about what hurts. They had a lot of fun acting out those aches and pains, while a "school nurse" frantically tried to help them all.

Shoutout to our Collicot 5th Graders who raised an additional $233.82 at their Social last week, to add to Collicot’s Glow Gold contribution! As Milton Glows Gold wraps up, we'll be excited to share the total raised from Jumping Jacks, generous sponsors and so many thoughtful kids who held lemonade stands, cookie sales and events like the Collicot Social.

Collicot’s first art projects of the year have come together beautifully! 2nd grade artists created artwork inspired by Olympic events. Students created their own figure by gluing down upcycled cardstock which is called a collagraph. Students then made a print or rubbing from their design and layered the prints on top of a background of concentric circles.
