"Mathematics is a beautiful, open, creative and multi-dimensional subject." -www.youcubed.org

We focus on building a classroom community of students thinking collectively, learning together, and constructing knowledge and understanding through activity and discussion.

In grades K-5, our foundational curriculum is Everyday Mathematics 4 (EM4).

Following the 2017 Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Mathematics Curriculum Framework, we seek to build simultaneously students' mathematical fluency, conceptual understanding, and ability to perform applied problem solving.

As students master mathematics content, they also engage in communication and reasoning as embodied in the Standards for Mathematical Practice:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Mathematics Instructional Coaching

District math coaches work in collaboration with the K-12 Math Director, the four elementary principals, and assistant principals/curriculum coordinators to increase student achievement and improve instructional practices using research-based math teaching strategies and data-driven instruction.  District math coaches also collaborate, model, co-teach and lead professional development for teachers.  In addition, district math coaches assist with the full implementation and monitoring of the district’s adopted math program while utilizing and enhancing the math curriculum with research-based open-education resources.
